AI & Soft Skills Training  for Medical Students

March 2022

University of Salamanca (USAL) aims to improve medical students' digital & social skills with an innovative online program developed in cooperation with European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and companies around 5 European countries: Spain, Finland, Greece, Netherlands and Belgium. This training includes understanding the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in today's medicine and training in Soft Skills, to encourage the confidence of healthcare professionals and society in AI. This educational program is being developed as part of the implementation of the Project AIIS.

Main Activities

AIIS: Artificial Intelligence, Innovation & Society, is a 3-year Erasmus+ project and its main output is to create a training program for medical students in Artificial Intelligence and Soft Skills. In order to achieve this goal we set up a series of actions such as:

  1. Research on Training on AI & Soft Skills in Medicine Studies,
  2. Design of AI & Social Skills Training in a collaborative learning platform
  3. Implementation of Collaborative Learning & Piloting
  4. Validation and Recognition of the Training in Europe’s Higher Institutions
  5. Internal and External Trainings for Innovative Methodologies in Education, Collaboration, Medicine, etc
  6. Quality Assurance of all the processes by External Evaluation Experts Board
  7. Communication and Raising awareness actions to a targeted audience (stakeholders) and to the general public about the themes of the project.

1st Results

Now we are concluding our first activity where the researchers of our consortium conducted a survey among medical teachers and students in several EU countries.  In parallel they analyzed the curricula of medical students in order to have a full analysis. The objective of this research is to detect the current training needs of these professionals in digital & social skills.

Research findings will be released soon and will later be utilized to design the program with interactive learning materials.

Collaboration

In order to implement all the aforementioned actions we have created a strong consortium which consists of 9 Organizations (Universities and private companies):

  1. University of Salamanca (Leader of the Project), Spain
  2. CIBER ISCiii, Spain
  3. MEUS, Spain
  4. University of Turku, Finland
  5. Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland
  6. University of Thessaly, Greece
  7. Science For You - SciFY, Greece
  8. Go Data Driven - GDD, Netherlands
  9. University of Mons, Belgium
